Etymology

Τυχόν is the neuter form of τυχών, the aorist active participle of the verb τυγχάνω, meaning to happen or to chance upon something. Over centuries the participle froze into an indeclinable word and shifted from describing an event that happens to marking something that may or may not exist. Modern Greek keeps it mostly in formal, legal, and administrative writing, where it functions much like the English word any in phrases such as any errors or any damages.
