Etymology

The word joins the prefix δια- (through, thoroughly) to φθορά, a noun meaning destruction or decay derived from the verb φθείρω, to destroy or ruin. In ancient Greek it described physical ruin or decay. Over time its main modern sense narrowed to moral and political corruption, especially bribery in public office. The verb φθείρω has no securely established Indo-European root, so no PIE form is given here.
