Etymology
The word comes from Ancient Greek ἀγγελία, meaning a message or piece of news brought by a messenger. It is built on ἄγγελος, meaning messenger, plus the abstract noun ending -ία, which turns a person or action into the thing produced. The origin of ἄγγελος itself is not settled; some scholars think it may be a loan from a Near Eastern language rather than an inherited Greek word. Over time the sense narrowed in Modern Greek from general news to the specific idea of a classified ad or public notice.
