Etymology
The word comes from Ancient Greek ἄγγελος, meaning messenger or envoy. Homer used it for both human heralds and divine messengers sent by the gods. Scholars are not certain where the root itself comes from, and some propose a non-Greek source, but this remains disputed. Through the Septuagint and New Testament, the word came to mean a messenger of God, and it passed via Latin angelus into English as angel.
