Etymology

Κλουβί comes from the Byzantine diminutive κλουβίον, itself a variant of κλωβίον, the diminutive of ancient Greek κλωβός, meaning cage or coop. The vowel shift from κλωβ- to κλουβ- happened over the medieval period as pronunciation changed. The root κλωβός itself has no secure origin outside Greek; linguists such as Beekes treat it as likely Pre-Greek, so no wider Indo-European family can be traced with confidence.
