Etymology
Εκλογή comes from the verb εκλέγω, built from εκ- (out of) and λέγω. Λέγω originally meant to gather or pick out, before it settled into its later sense of to say. That older sense survives in εκλέγω, to choose or elect. The suffix -ή turns the verb into an abstract noun: a picking-out, hence a choice or an election. The same root gave Latin legere, to gather or read, ancestor of English words like collect and elect.
