Etymology
επείγων is the present active participle of the verb επείγω 'to press, urge on, hasten', used adjectivally to mean 'urgent, pressing.' The verb is formed from the prefix ἐπί 'upon, against' plus a verbal stem ‑είγ‑ of disputed origin meaning roughly 'press.' Already in Ancient Greek ἐπείγω meant 'to press hard, drive on,' and the participle's image of something 'bearing down' on you yielded the modern sense 'urgent.'
