Etymology

Επιταγή comes from ancient Greek ἐπιταγή, meaning a command or injunction. It is built on the verb ἐπιτάσσω, to enjoin or order, which joins ἐπί (upon) with τάσσω (to arrange, to put in order). The banking sense, a written order to a bank to pay a sum, grew naturally out of the older meaning of a formal command.
