Είκοσι comes from Ancient Greek εἴκοσι, which originally began with a digamma (ϝείκοσι) that later dropped out of pronunciation and spelling. The word traces back to a Proto-Indo-European numeral built from the roots for "two" and "ten," reflecting the idea of two tens. The same ancient root produced numerals for twenty in many other Indo-European languages.
