Etymology
Κάθαρμα comes from the verb καθαίρω, meaning to cleanse or purify, with the suffix -μα attached to name the result of an action. In ancient Greek it literally meant refuse swept away in a cleansing rite, and by extension a person driven out as a scapegoat to purify a community. Orators such as Demosthenes already used it as an insult for a worthless person. Modern Greek kept only the insulting sense, stripped of the ritual meaning.
