Etymology
Formed from the adjective καθαρός ('clean, pure') with the productive denominal verb suffix -ίζω, meaning 'to make clean'. The root is already present in Ancient Greek καθαρός and the verb καθαίρω/καθαρίζω 'to purify, cleanse'. The same root yields κάθαρσις, the source of English 'catharsis'. The deeper origin of καθαρός itself is debated and often considered Pre-Greek.
