Etymology

Καλύτερος is the comparative form of καλός, the ordinary Greek word for good. Modern Greek builds comparatives by attaching the suffix -ύτερος to an adjective stem, so καλός becomes καλύτερος much as English adds -er to good in careful speech, except English actually uses the irregular better. The origin of καλός itself is disputed among linguists, so no secure Indo-European root is given here.
