Etymology
Γυρεύω is built from the noun γύρος, meaning turn or circuit, plus the verb-forming suffix -εύω, which converts nouns into verbs of habitual activity, as in δούλος to δουλεύω. The original sense was to go around, and this shifted to going around in search of something, and finally to the plain meaning of looking for. The deeper origin of γύρος itself is disputed among linguists, with some proposing a Pre-Greek substrate source rather than inherited Indo-European vocabulary, so no secure root can be given.
