Etymology

κατευθύνομαι is the mediopassive form of κατευθύνω, built from κατά (down, toward, an intensifying prefix) and εὐθύνω (to straighten, to guide), which itself derives from εὐθύς (straight, direct). In its passive and middle use the verb shifted from the literal 'to be straightened' toward the common present-day sense of 'to head toward' or 'to make one's way.' The origin of εὐθύς itself is not securely traced to a single Indo-European root.
