Etymology
Κείμενο is the substantivized neuter present passive participle of the ancient verb κεῖμαι, meaning to lie down or to be laid, be situated. A written text was thought of as something laid out or set down on a page, so the participle came to mean the piece of writing itself. This shift from lying to being written happened already in later antiquity and became fixed in Modern Greek.
