Etymology
κηδεία comes from ancient Greek κήδος, meaning care, worry, or grief, with the abstract-noun suffix -εία added to form a word for the act itself. In ancient use it covered the whole duty of caring for the dead: preparing the body, mourning, and burial. The modern word narrowed to mean the funeral ceremony proper. Beekes and other etymologists treat the origin of κήδος as unclear, so no secure Indo-European root can be given.
