κλίμα comes from ancient Greek κλίμα, meaning slope or inclination, itself from the verb κλίνειν, to lean or slope. Ancient geographers used it for a band of the earth defined by the slant of the sun's rays, and that sense narrowed over time into the modern word for climate. Latin borrowed the word as clima, and English took it from there.
