Etymology

Κλίμακα comes from ancient Greek κλῖμαξ (klîmax), meaning ladder or staircase. It was formed from the verb κλίνω, meaning to lean or incline. English borrowed the Greek word directly as climax, once a rhetorical term for a series of rising steps, before it settled into its modern sense of a peak. The same root gave κλίμα, meaning slope or region, which is the source of English climate.
