Etymology

Χόμπι is a direct loanword from English "hobby". The English word first meant a small horse or pony, tied to the pet name "Hobin", a diminutive of Robin. It later attached to "hobby-horse", a toy or amusement, and by the 19th century it had narrowed to mean a favorite leisure pursuit. Greek adopted the word largely unchanged in the 20th century, along with other imported vocabulary for modern leisure and consumer life.
