Etymology
The noun comes from the adjective ανώμαλος, built from the negative prefix αν- and ομαλός, meaning even or level. Ομαλός traces back to ὁμός, same, so the base sense is not-even, that is, irregular or abnormal. In everyday speech the adjective was pressed into service as a noun for a person who deviates from normal, respectable behavior, especially in a sexual sense.
