πολιτισμόςthe native Greek word for culture or civilization, more formal than κουλτούραEtymology
Κουλτούρα is a loanword, borrowed into Greek from Italian cultura or French culture. Both trace back to Latin cultura, meaning cultivation or tending, from the verb colere, to till or cultivate. The word entered Greek alongside the older, native term πολιτισμός, and the two now coexist with slightly different shades of meaning.
