The word descends from ancient Greek δεξίωσις, meaning a friendly welcome or handshake, from the verb δεξιόομαι, to greet someone by extending the right hand. That verb comes from δεξιός, meaning right or on the right side, since the right hand was the one offered in greeting. Modern Greek narrowed the sense from the act of greeting to the formal social event itself, the reception.
