Etymology

Πειθαρχία is a compound of πείθομαι, meaning to obey or be persuaded, and ἀρχή, meaning rule or authority. Together the word denotes submission to an order or command structure, and by extension the orderly conduct that results. It entered common use in military and civic Greek to describe obedience to those in charge.
