Greek στατιστικός is a modern coinage built on the same word family that gave English 'statistics' and German 'Statistik'. That family goes back to Neo-Latin 'statisticus', formed from Italian 'statista' (an expert in affairs of state) and ultimately from Latin 'status', meaning a standing or condition. Greek took the borrowed stem 'στατιστ-' and attached its own native adjective suffix '-ικός', so the word reads as Greek even though its history is pan-European. The Latin root behind 'status' is the same one that underlies the native Greek verb 'ίστημι', to stand.
