Etymology
Εμβόλιο comes from the ancient Greek έμβολον, something driven in or wedged in, built from εν- (in) and the root of βάλλω (to throw, to put). The word first described grafting a shoot into a plant. Doctors later reused it for the medical act of introducing a weakened agent into the body, and by the 19th century, alongside the spread of Jennerian vaccination, it settled into its modern sense of vaccine.
