Etymology
Κοιτιέμαι is the mediopassive present of κοιτάζω, an everyday colloquial variant of the standard passive κοιτάζομαι. Κοιτάζω itself grew out of κοίτη, the ancient word for a bed or resting place, tied to the verb κεῖμαι, to lie down. The sense shifted from lying in watch or in wait to the general modern meaning of looking or watching, and the passive form added the reflexive or reciprocal sense of looking at oneself or at each other.
