Etymology
κοιμάμαι descends from ancient Greek κοιμάομαι, the mediopassive of κοιμάω, itself built on the same root as κεῖμαι, "I lie down." The root traces to a Proto-Indo-European word for lying down or resting. Greek κῶμα, "deep sleep," comes from the same family and is the direct source of the English word "coma."
