Etymology
Παλάτι comes from Byzantine Greek παλάτιον, a borrowing of Latin palatium. The Latin word originally named the Palatine Hill in Rome, where emperors built their residences, and it later came to mean any grand royal building. The word spread across Europe from this same Latin source.
