Etymology
προμήθεια comes from the ancient adjective προμηθής, meaning provident or thoughtful in advance, built from the prefix πρό (before, forward) and a root tied to μῆτις (cunning intelligence, skill). The same elements gave the Titan Prometheus his name, traditionally read as forethought. In Modern Greek the old sense of foresight narrowed into the practical acts that foresight implies: stocking up on goods, arranging a supply, and, in banking, taking a small cut for handling a transaction.
