Etymology

Κόκαλο comes from the Byzantine Greek κόκκαλον, an extended form of κόκκος, meaning grain or seed. Speakers stretched the word for a hard little lump to cover bones in general. The classical word for bone, οστό, still exists but sounds more formal or medical. Today κόκαλο is the plain, everyday word people actually use.
