Etymology
The word comes from Ancient Greek Λύκειον, the name of a gymnasium and grove outside Athens sacred to Apollo Lykeios, where Aristotle later taught and founded his school. The epithet Lykeios attached to Apollo is ancient but its own origin is debated among specialists, so no single root should be asserted here. Modern Greek revived the word in the 19th century to name the final stage of secondary education, the sense it carries today.
