σιωπή comes from the ancient Greek verb σιωπάω/σιωπῶ, meaning to be silent or to hold one's tongue. The verb itself is of uncertain further origin, and no secure Indo-European root is reconstructed for it. The noun has kept largely the same meaning, silence, from antiquity through to Modern Greek.
