Etymology
Ματς is a direct loan from English "match" in its sports sense, and it entered Greek alongside football and other organized team sports in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. Greek borrowed the word whole and treats it as an indeclinable neuter noun, so it never changes its ending for case or number. English "match" itself goes back to Old English gemæcca, meaning a mate or equal, from a Germanic root tied to the idea of two sides fitted or matched against each other.
