Etymology

Βιτρίνα is a loanword from Italian vetrina, meaning shop window. Vetrina derives from vetro, the Italian word for glass, plus the diminutive suffix -ina. Vetro itself goes back to Latin vitrum, meaning glass. Greek adopted the Italian word whole, and speakers today do not analyze it into parts.
