Etymology
Ούτως comes from Ancient Greek οὕτως, an adverb built on the demonstrative pronoun οὗτος, meaning 'this one'. Οὗτος itself is traditionally analyzed as the article ὁ fused with αὐτός, though the exact prehistoric formation is debated among linguists. The adverb keeps the old formal tone of the pronoun and has survived into Modern Greek mainly in written, legal, and set expressions, while everyday speech uses έτσι instead.
