Etymology

Βουνό comes from the Ancient and Byzantine Greek βουνός, meaning hill or mound. The origin of βουνός itself is disputed; most linguists treat it as a pre-Greek substrate word, borrowed into Greek before the classical period rather than inherited from Indo-European. Over time the masculine βουνός shifted to the neuter form βουνό in spoken Greek, which became the standard modern word.
