Etymology
The word comes from the verb συνειδέναι, built from συν- (together, with) and οἶδα (to know, an old perfect form meaning 'I have seen, therefore I know'). The sense is knowing something together with yourself, being a witness to your own actions. This is the same logic as Latin con-scientia, which gave English 'conscience' and 'consciousness'.
