Modern Greek πέφτω descends from Ancient Greek πίπτω (píptō) 'to fall,' originally a reduplicated present built on the Proto-Indo-European root *peth₂- 'to fall, fly.' The aorist and future stems (έπεσα, θα πέσω) preserve the older πεσ-/πετ- shape, while the present stem was remodeled in later Greek into πέφτω. The same root underlies Greek πτώση 'fall, (grammatical) case' and πτώμα 'corpse.'
