Etymology

Σακούλα is built from σάκος (also σάκκος), an ancient Greek word for a coarse sack. Greek borrowed σάκκος long ago from a Semitic language, the same source that gave Hebrew its word for sack. The diminutive suffix -ούλα was later added to form σακούλα, originally meaning a small sack and now the everyday word for any bag.
