Etymology
Είδηση comes from ancient Greek εἴδησις, meaning knowledge or information. That noun derives from οἶδα, the perfect-tense verb meaning "I know," which itself traces back to the same root as εἶδος, "form" or "appearance." The underlying idea is that knowing something first meant having seen it. Over time the abstract sense of "knowledge" narrowed in Modern Greek to "a piece of news," something newly known.
