Etymology

Ειδοποιώ is a compound of είδος, meaning form or appearance, and ποιώ, meaning to make or to do. In ancient philosophical usage, the related adjective ειδοποιός described something that gives form or defines a kind. Modern Greek narrowed this to a practical sense: to notify someone is to make a fact known to them, to give them the missing piece of information.
