Etymology

The verb combines the prefix προ- (before) with ειδοποιώ (to notify). Ειδοποιώ itself draws on είδος, tied to the ancient verb οἶδα, meaning to know or to have seen. Add ποιώ (to make, to do) and the old sense is roughly to make known. Placing προ- in front simply pushes that notification earlier: to make known before the fact.
