Etymology

Modern Greek σκύλος grew out of ancient σκύλαξ, a word for a puppy or young dog already found in Homer. Over time the diminutive-looking form displaced the older, more formal κύων as the everyday word for dog. The deeper origin of σκύλαξ is not settled among scholars, so no further root should be assumed.
