Etymology

Κολέγιο entered Modern Greek as a loanword, most directly from Italian collegio or French collège. Both trace back to Latin collegium, a body of colleagues joined by a common duty. The Greek ending was reshaped to -ιο, the standard pattern for neuter loanwords borrowed into the language.
