Etymology
Greek borrowed ρομαντικός in the 19th century from French romantique, at the same time as the rest of Europe adopted the term for the Romantic movement in art and literature. The French word itself goes back to Old French romanz, the word for a vernacular story or tale, which is tied to Latin Romanicus, meaning in the Roman tongue. Greek simply attached its own adjective ending to the borrowed stem, a common pattern for 19th-century loanwords tied to European intellectual life.
