φιλαράκι is a diminutive built on φίλος, the ordinary Greek word for friend. Colloquial speech first stretched φίλος into φιλάρος or φιλαράκος, an augmentative slang form for a close pal, and then softened that with the diminutive ending -άκι to give φιλαράκι. The origin of φίλος itself is disputed among linguists and is not securely traced to a Proto-Indo-European root.
