Etymology
διαθήκη comes from the verb διατίθημι, built from the prefix δια- ("through, across") and τίθημι ("to place, to set"). The noun originally meant a disposition or arrangement, something laid out in order. It came to mean a legal will because a will is an arrangement of one's property, and it came to mean a religious covenant because Greek translators of the Hebrew Bible used it to render "berith," the pact between God and his people.
