Πιστωτικός is built on πίστη, the Greek word for trust or faith, which also gave the financial sense of credit. The adjectival suffix -ωτικός marks something as pertaining to or capable of an action, so the word literally means relating to trust or credit. Πίστη itself traces back to the verb πείθω, to persuade or convince someone to trust.
