Etymology
Άσπρος comes from Byzantine Greek ἄσπρος, which first meant 'silver coin.' That sense goes back to Latin asper, 'rough,' a word used for coins with an unworn, rough-struck surface. Over time the word shifted from naming the coin to naming its bright, pale color, and by the medieval period it had become the ordinary Greek word for white.
