Etymology
Χείλι is the everyday spoken form of the older word χείλος, meaning lip, or more broadly the rim of something. Χείλος goes back unchanged to Ancient Greek, where it already carried both senses: the lip of a mouth and the edge of a vessel. Its deeper origin is not settled. Many scholars treat it as a word Greek inherited from a pre-Greek substrate language rather than from Proto-Indo-European, so no secure root or cognate set exists.
